Fencing for residential
The residential market is Fenced.ca's volume base. Privacy fence (wood, vinyl, composite, steel-look), pool fence (frameless glass, aluminum), picket and ornamental front-yard fence, dog-run enclosures, garden trellis and decorative — every fence category we carry serves a residential application. Pool fence is the most regulated residential workflow. Quebec's Règlement sur la sécurité des piscines résidentielles (2025) is the strictest pool-enclosure standard in Canada — 1.2 m minimum height, no climbable surface within 1 m, self-closing self-latching gates with 1.5 m latch height. Ontario, BC, and Alberta have parallel municipal-bylaw or building-code requirements. Front-yard restrictions: most Canadian municipalities cap front-yard fence height at 1.2 m / 4′ to preserve corner-lot daylight triangles. Side and rear yards generally permit 1.8 m / 6′ without permit (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa); over 1.8 m typically requires a variance or special use permit. Per-province residential market notes:
Ontario suburban (Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham): board-on-board PT pine and vinyl privacy dominate. Lot lines typically 9–12 m wide, fencing runs 30–70 LF per yard. Pool fence demand rising sharply since the 2018 OBC update.
Quebec residential (Montreal, Laval, Longueuil): cedar tongue-and-groove and aluminum + glass pool combos. Quebec's Loi 322 drove a 3× increase in pool-fence retrofits since 2020.
BC residential (Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey): horizontal cedar slat fences for modern infill, glass pool fence for high-end. Coastal salt requires PVC-coated or marine-grade hardware.
Prairie residential (Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon): wood and vinyl dominate, with 2.4 m frost-depth footings standard. Strong wind requires heavier post spec — 6×6 cedar at 1.8 m centres.
Atlantic residential (Halifax, Moncton, St. John's): chain-link is the price leader; cedar for premium properties. Salt-air protection critical within 5 km of coast.
